A Pretty “Great” Generation

world_media

My previous post was about how Tom Brokaw, the man that described America’s “Greatest Generation,” which came of age during the Great Depression, fought World War II and rebuilt America.

Today, I want to talk about a new generation of people. Our generation is coming of age in “The Great Recession.” We are fighting wars, but we are also revolutionizing technology and rebuilding, not just America, but the rest of the world. For us, technology is no longer just a means of social activity, but also an educational, informational, political and cultural tool. And, it’s changing everything…

In June 2009, in an interview with the Guardian, UK PM Gordon Brown said, “Foreign policy can no longer be the province of just a few elites.”

He explained that “people have now got the ability to speak to each other across continents, to join with each other in communities that are not based simply on territory, streets, but networks; and you’ve got the possibility of people building alliances right across the world.”

Sure, social media cannot change history with a backspace or lead a revolution with a Twitter update, but it has fostered, in our pretty “great” generation, a connectedness and an interest in world affairs that is unmatched.
